The biggest difference between hard and soft enamel is the finished texture and appearance.
Hard enamel pins are generally more durable because every color is poured into the pin separately up to the edge and is baked afterwards. This means that a pin with 5 colors will be baked 5 times. When you touch the pins, you will feels smoothly and flat surface, and it will has glistening feel under the light.
The enamel is baked at a very high temperature and is polished down to the metal edges that separate the colors. You can barely feel these edges anymore after. You can still see the metal plating; it’s just smooth so there are no raised edges.
Soft Enamel pins, will feels texture, dimensional, are able to hold more detail, so we often recommend using soft enamel for more complicated and intricate designs, such as people and faces. Have a more ‘dimensional’ look to them, as the enamel dries below the metal ridges of the custom mold which stops the individual colors from running and mixing together. This process leads to the badges having slightly raised edges, which gives the ‘bumpy’ texture.
The advantage is that these are cheaper and they have more possibilities for complex designs and colors. Every color is applied to the pin after which everything will be baked in once time. The colors won’t come to the edges, which means that you can really feel the difference between the colors and the edges.
